Arrests show risk of mixing riding mowers and booze

Friday, June 26, 2009

News Article Photo DUI laws include riding mowers.

Two people have been arrested recently for driving lawn mowers while under the influence of alcohol.

Police in Vassalboro, Maine arrested a 51-year-old man May 29 after he and a friend allegedly made a beer run on a riding lawn mower. The man's license had been revoked, so he and a passenger decided to drive a riding mower to the liquor store, the Associated Press reported.

In Devils Lake, North Dakota earlier this week, police arrested a 31-year-old Idaho man after he allegedly drove a stolen riding mower on a city street with no lights at 3 a.m., according to the AP.

Law enforcement officials say it is against the law to drive any type of vehicle while under the influence, including golf carts, lawn mowers or even bicycles.

A Nebraska woman was recently charged with motor vehicle homicide and driving under the influence when the golf cart she was driving crashed, throwing a passenger from the cart who was run over by the vehicle and later died.
